Elder Housing Initiative

The Elder Housing Initiative (EHI) is a collaborative effort by concerned Florida organizations to call attention to the elder housing crisis and promote solutions at the state and local levels. The focus is on people 55 and over who have lost or are at risk of losing their homes. EHI promotes a wide range of independent housing solutions, including, but not limited to, supportive housing.   

Florida has more people over 65 than any state except California

700,000 low-income households 55+ pay over 50% of income for housing

Social Security is the Sole Source of Income for 1.35 Million

The buying power of Social Security benefits declined by 36% from 2000 to 2023

28% of those experiencing homelessness are 55+

Women are more at risk than men
